What your profit result means

Net profit / loss is what you keep after paying trading fees on both the buy and the sell. ROI shows that profit as a percentage of your total cost (purchase plus buy-side fee). If you enter a current price instead of a sell price, the numbers describe unrealized gain or loss on an open position — not cash in hand until you sell.

Formulas we use

Coins = amount in coins, or USD invested ÷ buy price. Cost basis = coins × buy price. Buy fee = cost basis × (fee % ÷ 100). Total cost = cost basis + buy fee. Gross proceeds = coins × sell price. Sell fee = gross proceeds × (fee % ÷ 100). Net profit = gross proceeds − sell fee − total cost. ROI = (net profit ÷ total cost) × 100. Break-even sell (per coin) = total cost ÷ (coins × (1 − fee % ÷ 100)).

Worked examples

  1. Spot BTC trade with 0.1% fees

Buy 0.5 BTC at $42,000, sell at $48,000, 0.1% fee on buy and sell.

    Cost $21,000 + buy fee $21 = $21,021 total cost. Gross sell $24,000 − sell fee $24 = $23,976 net proceeds. Profit = $23,976 − $21,021 = $2,955.

Net profit about $2,955 — ROI ≈ 14.1% on capital including fees.

  2. USD invested in Ethereum

Invest $10,000 at ETH buy price $2,500, sell at $3,000, 0.1% fees.

You hold 4 ETH. Total cost $10,010 after buy fee. Net proceeds $11,988 after sell fee on $12,000 gross.

    Net profit about $1,978 — ROI ≈ 19.8%.

  3. Losing trade (unrealized or realized loss)

1 ETH bought at $3,500, sold (or marked) at $3,200, 0.1% fees.

    Total cost $3,503.50. Net proceeds $3,196.80. Profit = −$306.70.

Net loss about $307 — ROI ≈ −8.8%. Break-even sell would be above $3,200 once fees are included.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate profit on Bitcoin or crypto?
Multiply your coin amount by the sell price to get gross proceeds, subtract sell-side fees, then subtract what you paid including buy-side fees. That net figure is your profit or loss in USD.
What is ROI on a crypto trade?
Return on investment (ROI) is net profit divided by total cost (including buy fees), expressed as a percentage. A 10% ROI means you gained ten cents for every dollar of cost basis plus buy fee.
Does this include exchange trading fees?
Yes — enter your fee per side (for example 0.1% for many spot exchanges). The same percentage is applied to the buy and the sell. Withdrawal, network, or funding fees are not included unless you fold them into your prices manually.
What is break-even sell price?
The per-coin price you need to sell at so net proceeds after the sell fee exactly cover your total cost (including the buy fee). It is always slightly above your raw buy price when fees are non-zero.
Can I use current price instead of sell price?
Yes. Treat the current market price as the sell price to see unrealized P&L on a position you still hold. The result updates as prices move but does not account for taxes until you realize the trade.
Is this the same as my tax gain?
Not necessarily. Tax rules use cost basis, holding period, and sometimes specific accounting methods (FIFO, etc.). Use our crypto tax calculator for rough tax estimates and speak to a tax professional for filing.
