What the fee estimate means

The total is how much ETH you would pay for the gas units your transaction uses at the selected gas price (base fee + tip on live speeds). That ETH amount is converted to USD using the ETH price shown. Wallets may set a higher max fee so your transaction still confirms if the base fee rises — the estimate here is the expected cost at current prices, not the wallet’s absolute ceiling.

Formula we use

Fee per transaction (ETH) = gas limit × gas price (gwei) ÷ 1,000,000,000. Fee in USD = fee in ETH × ETH/USD price. Total for multiple transactions = fee per transaction × count. On EIP-1559 transactions, the base fee is burned and the priority fee (tip) goes to the validator; our live speeds use recent base fee plus typical tips.

Worked examples

  1. Simple ETH transfer

21,000 gas (standard ETH send), gas price 25 gwei, ETH at $3,200.

    21,000 × 25 ÷ 1,000,000,000 = 0.000525 ETH → 0.000525 × $3,200 ≈ $1.68

About $1.68 per transfer at those settings — actual base fee moves block to block.

  2. ERC-20 token swap

150,000 gas (typical DEX swap), gas price 40 gwei, ETH at $3,200.

    150,000 × 40 ÷ 1,000,000,000 = 0.006 ETH → 0.006 × $3,200 = $19.20

Roughly $19 per swap before any MEV or router differences; complex routes can use more gas.

  3. Ten approvals at standard speed

    46,000 gas each (ERC-20 approve), 30 gwei, 10 transactions, ETH at $3,000.

    Per tx: 46,000 × 30 ÷ 1e9 = 0.00138 ETH ($4.14). Ten txs ≈ 0.0138 ETH (~$41.40).

Batching or fewer approvals saves gas; the calculator multiplies per-tx fee by your count.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an Ethereum transaction cost?
It depends on gas used and the gas price in gwei. Simple ETH sends often use 21,000 gas; swaps and NFTs use more. Multiply gas × price in gwei, convert to ETH, then to dollars — or use this tool with live network data.
What is gwei?
Gwei is one billionth of an ETH (10⁻⁹ ETH). Gas prices are quoted in gwei per gas unit, so 30 gwei means you pay 30 × 10⁻⁹ ETH for each unit of gas consumed.
Why do Ethereum gas fees change?
Fees rise when blocks are full and users compete with higher tips. The base fee adjusts automatically block by block based on demand. Weekends and low-activity periods are often cheaper.
What is the difference between base fee and priority fee?
After EIP-1559, each block has a base fee that is burned (removed from supply). You add a priority fee (tip) to incentivize validators to include your transaction. Total gas price ≈ base fee + tip.
How can I pay less gas?
Transact when the network is quiet, choose a slower speed, batch actions with account abstraction or L2s, and avoid unnecessary contract calls. Setting too low a tip can delay confirmation.
Is gas limit the same as gas price?
No. Gas limit is the maximum units of work your transaction can consume (set by transaction type). Gas price is how much you pay per unit. Fee = limit × price.

How it works

  • We read the current base fee and recent priority fees (tips) from the Ethereum network, plus the live ETH price.
  • Pick a speed and a transaction type, or enter a custom gas limit and gas price in gwei.
  • The fee is gas limit × (base fee + tip). The base fee is burned; the tip goes to the validator who includes your transaction.
